Today I had my first Western Riding lesson, with Michael Langford. Michael has produced horses from scratch to National level, and has a wealth of experience working with horses in the U.K. and the USA.
I was hoping you learn some new skills and have a bit of fun, but it was so much more than that. Michael trains horses to work in self carriage, with lightness, obedience and flexibility. He immediately identified where each of my horses had stiffness and resistance, and gave me exercises to start to remedy this. I rode in a dressage saddle, and far from wanting me to sit like a cowboy, Michael had me sit straight and in balance, correcting my weak left side and forward left shoulder. He noticed that as fast as any dressage coach I’ve ever had, pointing out that that if I wasn’t sitting straight I would get in the way of my horses movement.
Michael talked about the need to achieve flexibility in my my horses neck, in the barrel and through her hind quarters. We worked mainly in walk and trot and started by asking for flexion in an outline, in and out of a circle. I think it was lighter and softer than any flatwork lesson I’ve had, with lots of releasing the reins then picking back up again to encourage the horse to hold herself up, and to be light in the flexion.
My ‘on the forehand’ New Forest became lighter in her shoulder without me having to struggle at all. My tense rushy warmblood was softer and more rhythmic. Michael even corrected how my horse stood still how I walked on from halt. Consequently I had a much softer calmer horse.
Michael has agreed to run a clinic for the riding club. If you want a lighter, more responsive but relaxed horse, then this is for you. Michael is a true horseman and his methods compliment any discipline that intends to achieve a gymnastic obedient horse.
